Liverpool has three main universities: the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Hope University. Edge Hill University which is in fact teacher-training college in Edge Hill district of Liverpool is currently located in Ormskirk out of Liverpool in South-West Lancashire. Liverpool is also home to Liverpool Institute of Performing Art (LIPA). 


The University of Liverpool, founded in 1881 as the original ‘red brick’. It is one of the UK’s leading research-intensive higher education institutions. It is consistently ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide, Liverpool is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of the UK’s leading research universities a specially in health and life sciences, science and engineering, and humanities and social sciences. Its interdisciplinary research centres include the National Centre for Zoonosis Research and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy.

The University has 33,000 students, 8,000 of whom travel from all over the world and 215,000 alumni in 171 countries. It’s globally cooperate with university in Suzhou near Shanghai, in partnership with Xi’an Jiaotong University, as well as a campus in London. The University is the largest provider of 100% online postgraduate degree courses in Europe with over 10,000 students studying for Liverpool degrees around the world.

It was the first university to offer degrees in biochemistry, architecture, civic design, veterinary science, oceanography and social science.

Liverpool John Moores University was previously a polytechnic, and gained  his status in 1992. It is named in honour of Sir John Moores, one of the founders of the Littlewoods football pools and retail group, who was a major benefactor.  Moores was a great believer in the creation of opportunity for all, which embodies the ethos of LJMU in providing educational routes for people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

Today, with a great community of 25,000 students from over 100 countries world-wide, 2,500 staff and 250 degree courses, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest, most dynamic universities in the UK. 

The university is currently organised into five faculties (which are each split into schools or centres):

Liverpool Hope University  was formed through the merger of three colleges. It become university in 2005. It is the only ecumenical university in Europe. It is situated on both sides of Taggart Avenue in Childwall and has a second campus in the city centre (the Cornerstone).

Liverpool Hope University has international students from more than 80 countries around the world. Its excellent academic record and supportive pastoral care is complemented by the beautiful setting of the campuses. 


Main faculties are:
